A Fine and Performing Arts Magnet Cluster School

Meet the Administration

Welcome to Ravenswood Elementary! Housed in one of the oldest elementary school buildings in the city, we are a small Fine and Performing Arts Magnet Cluster school. We provide students with engaging academics and embrace the social-emotional development of every child.

When I joined Ravenswood in the fall of 2013, I discovered the most vibrant, thriving school community I’ve ever had the privilege of serving. In both academics and school environment, our community strives to provide the best experience possible for our students and families. We are a truly diverse community, and we embrace that diversity as a strength and core value.  We believe that education transforms us, our community and our world.

Ravenswood is a Fine and Performing Arts Magnet Cluster school because we know that learning in an integrated arts environment leads to students who are strong communicators, creative thinkers, and more deeply engaged citizens and family members. Our curriculum celebrates the integrated arts through many perspectives:  through the eyes of young students learning about culture through reading and writing, from fourth-grade students examining westward expansion through the lens of student-created artifacts, to middle school students studying how to design and produce show sets. Students also take dance, drama, and visual arts each week along with physical education.

There is a supportive, celebratory environment at Ravenswood that takes many forms and enriches students, families and staff. I enthusiastically invite you to come visit us and see for yourself that great things happening at Ravenswood!

Ravenswood School welcomed Katie Welsh as assistant principal in June 2016. Katie comes to Ravenswood with a vast array of educational experience and a genuine love for teaching and learning. As a classroom teacher she taught multiple grades in Boston and Chicago. She obtained her masters in Reading from Northeastern Illinois University where she found her calling as a literacy coach at the school level before moving into instructional coaching at the Network and district level in CPS. After studying Educational Leadership at Roosevelt University, Ms. Welsh served the district as the Deputy of the Pilsen/Little Village Network focusing on building teacher leadership across schools. She brings a wealth of knowledge around special education best practices and policy as she also served as the Deputy for the Office of Diverse Learners prior to leaving central office to get back to where she felt the most fulfilled, at the school level with teachers, students and their families. Most recently, Ms. Welsh served the Near North community as the Assistant Principal of Jenner Academy of the Arts, where she focused instructional improvements on balanced literacy implementation, Universal Design for Learning, and a restorative approach to conflict resolution. When Ms. Welsh is not at school, you can find her accompanying her two sons Jack (6) and Leo (2.5) to one of Chicago’s many wonderful parks or checking out new local restaurants with her husband Sean.
