Fine Arts Overview

Ravenswood School is a Fine and Performing Arts Magnet Cluster school. That’s certainly a mouthful. But what exactly does this mean for our students?

This means that Ravenswood School remains a neighborhood school, enrolling all applicants within its boundaries; yet, in addition, it offers an expanded Fine and Performing Arts program to all students, which integrates the arts into core subject areas. As a result of our Magnet Cluster status, we receive additional support from Chicago Public Schools (CPS) for professional development, partnerships, collaboration, and staff positions.

At Ravenswood School, all students from Kindergarten through 8th grade, as well as our tuition-based Pre-K students, receive Art, Drama and Dance at least once a week with a qualified instructor. In addition, our arts teachers work collaboratively with classroom teachers to create Arts Integration units that integrate the arts into core subjects, such as math and science. These classroom-based units are conducted in addition to regularly scheduled arts classes.

Student work produced during these arts integration units is placed on display during Winter and Spring assemblies and other times during the school year, providing parents the opportunity to see and experience their child’s creativity and hard work.

An Arts Integration Philosophy
The philosophy behind Arts Integration at Ravenswood School is built on the idea that arts integration can illuminate challenging academic content areas for students by providing them the opportunity to interact with the material in a new way. We have found, through post-unit assessments, that these units have been very successful at engaging our students. The results of this are seen in higher test scores, a better understanding of classroom material, and a stronger interest and connection to learning.

Ravenswood Elementary School students in 5th – 8th Grades are asked to make their F.A.M.E. Elective choices for each quarter: Fall, Winter & Spring Quarters.
