Ravenswood Elementary eighth-graders have been working hard to raise funds for their class trip to Washington, D.C., but they need your help to get them to our nation’s capital.
For many of these students, this will be their first trip outside of Chicago and could be a life-changing experience that they might not otherwise have. The class (55 students + teacher chaperones) will travel round-trip on two coach buses, and have three full days to tour D.C.
The D.C. class trip is a culmination of our students’ history, art, social studies and language arts classes. The students hope to visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Arlington National Cemetery, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the U.S. Capitol, the White House, and the National Mall and Memorials. This trip will show our students how people from different backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs are all part of the United States.
It is important to our school that every 8th-grader who wishes to attend can do so – regardless of each family’s financial situation. The kids are of mixed racial, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds (41% of Ravenswood School students live in low-income households with higher percentages in the upper-grade levels). Each family has been asked to contribute approximately half the cost of the trip. For those families unable to contribute, financial scholarships are offered, and are included in our fundraising efforts.
The students have hosted two movie nights, a pancake breakfast, and have sold pizzas and candy bars to raise funds for their trip. To date, the students and their families have raised approximately $19,000, but we still need to raise about $7,000 more. We are using our GoFundMe campaign to help fund six full scholarships and to help lower the trip’s costs to all families.
Donations will go to Friends of Ravenswood School (FORS), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that helps support programs at the school. You will receive donation receipt for your tax records. (For more information about FORS, go to http://ravenswoodelementary.org/fors/)
The Ravenswood School community has been incredibly supportive of our fund-raising efforts, and we are looking to the broader community to help our eight-graders keep their tradition of going a class trip to Washington, D.C.
On behalf of the students of the Ravenswood Eight Grade Class of 2018, thank you very much for your support.
